Baby Boomer Time Bomb = Opportunity for Emerging Leaders

An article in the Business Recruitment Section of the Evening Standard on Tuesday highlights the rapid demographic shift as more baby boomers head towards retirement age. There is a danger and opportunity associated with this.

Francois Moscovici, an expert in retaining talent in business, points out that we are heading towards a shortage of 30 - 44 year olds. As more senior people start to retire or scale back their hours, the next generation of leaders will need to step up quite quickly. In many cases, they will be managing people older than themselves. This can lead to conflict as the younger leader is typically more ambitious and driven. Moscovici points out that will be essential that they acquire coaching and influencing skills to be effective.

The ones who master these skills will have the best opportunities. The ones who don't will find their career journey is far more stressful as they'll be put into big roles that they are not really growing into. It will cost them and their organisation dearly.

This accords with my experience. Having specialised in developing people in this age range for many years, I see there is a natural developmental track as they develop the confidence, maturity and wisdom to be effective leaders. Today there is a need to accelerate that as organisations and individuals experience a faster rate of change. I am passionate about doing this and have seen what a difference effective coaching and mentoring makes to people at this age and stage. Their growth benefits them as they learn to achieve more with less stress. It also has a positive impact with the development and motivation of their teams and the success of their organisation.

I've recently been working with a client who has really grown into his role over the past year. He epitomises the new generation of leaders we need. His boss is delighted with his progress and his team rate him as the manager they would most want to work for in the organisation. In other parts of the organisation, many talented people are feeling demotivated and leaving. This reminds us that great leadership is worth a huge amount of money.
